3 Moms ~ Catching Up and Breaking All the Rules

I realize it has been a few days since I last posted, travel, kids, and sickness have put me a little behind schedule. Here are our meals from the past few days.

Thursday- We had leftover shepherd’s pie for lunch and spaghetti for dinner. There were lots of yummy sides with dinner, but honestly, I can’t remember them!

Friday- Breakfast was, you guessed it… Crunchy Corn Bran. My mom was generous enough to buy us ten boxes to take home with us, and enjoy for a little longer. For lunch we were on the road and stopped at Steak and Shake. As we pulled in I had a familiar feeling about this Georgia restaurant. I knew we had been there before, but couldn’t remember if is was a good or bad experience. After sitting for about 10 minutes in our booth with no service, I remembered… it was bad! The food was okay burgers, fries, and milkshakes, but we were ready to get out of there when the meal was over. For dinner, we had reached our hotel and enjoyed a meal at Outback. I love Outback because their portions are so huge that the kids can split meals easily. We had steak, pasta, and salads. I am glad we spent some extra money on dinner to avoid eating more fast food. The kids ate veggies and pasta so at least they were getting something healthy.

Saturday- We had breakfast at the hotel (cereal, bagels, waffles) and then hit the road. We stopped at Texas Steakhouse for lunch. Once again, I did not want to eat fast food and the kids had pasta, veggies and steak. We all shared meals with each other to keep the cost down. We took a late afternoon break and stopped for ice cream at McDonalds. I am not a big fan of that place, but it was a cheap snack, and they had an indoor play place so the kids ran around for about 30 minutes and had a great time. We finally arrived home about 7 o’clock to a house with no food.

We unloaded the car and then I went to the store to get something for dinner. On the way to the store I realized I was about to break all of my shopping rules.

1. I didn’t have a list.

2. I didn’t have a menu planned.

3. I forgot my coupons.

4. I didn’t have any cash, just my debit card.

I was tired and I knew I had 4 very hungry kids at home so I picked up some lunchables, a frozen pizza, mac and cheese, hot dogs, buns, a loaf of bread, milk, eggs and detergent. My total was $25. When I got home the kids wanted to know if they should unload everything so I could take a picture. I said no, because I was tired and they were hungry, and I am sure you know what all those things look like anyway.

I plan on making a real shopping trip on Tuesday and my menu plan will be up later tonight. I am almost out of grain, so this should be an interesting rest of the month for me and store bought bread.

I can’t believe this is my last week of 3 Moms, this series has really helped me to think about what we are eating as a family. I see lots of room for improvement for my family, and can’t wait to look back and really learn from this experience.

  1. Welcome home! I know you broke some rules, but I am still very impressed with how disciplined you were while on vacation. And sometimes, you just have to break the rules! 🙂 I
