Beef Stroganoff without Mushrooms

Beef Stroganoff without Mushrooms at The Happy Housewife

As I mentioned in a previous picky eater post, I am not a fan of mushrooms. I can eat them, but when given the choice, I prefer to skip the fungus and move on. My husband loves Beef Stroganoff, so I finally found a recipe that tastes pretty good without the mushrooms.

Beef Stroganoff without Mushrooms

  • 3 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 tablespoon garlic
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • pepper to taste
  • 2 pounds sirloin tip, cut into thin slices (I use top round cut into thin strips)
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 (16 ounce) container sour cream (do not use fat free)

  1. Slice steak into thin strips, and chop onion.
  2. Melt butter in skillet (or wok).
  3. Add beef and cook until brown.
  4. About 3 minutes after starting the beef add onion, salt, pepper, and garlic. (I added too much butter, you should not have this much liquid in your pan.)
  5. When the beef is browned turn down the heat and add sour cream.
  6. Do not let the sour cream boil, just heat through and serve over noodles.

If you want mushrooms in your recipe, then add sliced mushrooms when you add the onion.

  1. That recipe is so easy. I am going to add it to my weekly menu as well. Thanks for all the tips. I enjoy them all.

  2. I like to also add about a Tbl of Worchestershire sauce.

  3. That looks awesome… and easy. And those are two things I really like. Plus dh will love that there aren’t any mushrooms. 🙂 Thanks for sharing this!

  4. To make it less expensive you could use ground beef instead of the steak. We make it the same way but sometimes add Lipton Onion Soup Mix to give it a little extra flavor.

  5. Hello could I quote some of the material from this entry if I provide a link back to your site?

  6. Hey would you mind letting me know which webhost you’re utilizing? I’ve loaded your blog in 3 different browsers and I must say this blog loads a lot faster then most. Can you recommend a good internet hosting provider at a honest price? Many thanks, I appreciate it!

This sounds easy and cheap. My husband doesn’t like mushrooms so this is such a relief. And he can have left overs too. I like how you took pictures too. Thank you!

  8. What a great dinner! My whole family ate even my seven year old. I paired it with steamed veggies for a very inexpensive meal. Thank you. 🙂

  9. So glad that you posted this! My bride of four months also does not like mushrooms, as well as my stepdaughter…So this is definitely the way to go! (I will add the Worchestshire sauce as well)!

  10. I am Allergic to mushrooms & have to make a classic Russian dish for my cooking club. This sounds great & I think everyone will like it.

  11. I love all of the different alternatives that you offer when a certain ingredient is not liked in my household. Your website is a god sent answer to all of my questions! PLEASE , keep up the GOOD WORK!!! My kind regards , Mrs Ronda Gauvreau.

  12. Sounds like a fabulous recipe. My hubby and I are not big fans of mushrooms so we love that your recipe omits that ingredient. Thank you. I am going to make it tonight for dinner.

The sour cream made it a bit too tangy for my husband, next time I’ll be cutting it with half heavy cream, see how that tastes. Otherwise it went well with steamed veges on the side.
