Bread Machine Pitas on the Grill

Bread Machine Pitas on the Grill at The Happy Housewife

Thanks to a reader, I decided to try my bread machine pitas on the grill. My family loves fresh pitas for lunch but it is hard to justify turning the oven to 400 degrees with temperatures rising outside. The best part about grilling pitas is that they puff every time! Usually when I make my pita bread I have one or two that don’t puff up in the oven. When I grilled them, every single one puffed up nice and high.

Bread Machine Pitas on the Grill

  • 3 cups flour ( used whole wheat)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 2 teaspoons yeast
  • 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 cups water, roughly at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  1. Add ingredients to your bread machine as directed in the manual. For my machine I add all the wet ingredients first and then the dry ingredients, adding the yeast last.
  2. Set your machine to the dough setting.
  3. After the machine has finished the dough cycle your dough is ready to be shaped into balls. I actually doubled this recipe, so I have twice as much dough in my machine as the recipe would normally make.
  4. Take your dough and divide it into eight pieces and roll with your hands into balls. They will be roughly the size of a racquetball.
  5. Cover with a damp towel and let them rest for about 20 minutes.
  6. While the dough is resting turn on your grill and turn it to the highest setting.
  7. After 20 minutes roll the pitas into small circles about 1/8 inch thick.
  8. Take your dough and place it on the hot grill. Shut the lid and try really, really hard not to peek.
  9. Grill for about 3 minutes, open the grill and flip the pitas. They should be puffed up.
  10. Cook another 3 minutes, remove from grill and serve.

I don’t have a bread machine, and was wondering if anyone has made this dough by hand?

I am so tempted to try it!

Store bought pitas are so expensive… $5.99! YIKES!

    • TheHappyHousewife says:

I made them by hand before too, I am just lazy and love to use my bread machine when I can. 🙂

  2. We no longer have our bread machine but I’m thinking I can do these in our KitchenAid for sure. Copying down your recipe to try!

  3. Seriously, no way…how fun. First your grilled pizza and now this. I’m loving that!!

  4. That’s so easy to make and it looks good!

  5. Looks wonderful!

  6. I make my dough in the Kitchenaid all the time, but I am SO going to try making them on the grill. Guess I know what is for dinner tonight.

  7. Somebody's Mimi says:

I love the photo! And I am sure I would love your pitas.

  8. they look great!! and we love all sorts of different breads for our sandwiches so this will definitely make our list. Thanks!!

  9. That is so cool! I’ve always wanted to make pitas, but just never got around to trying it. Love the idea of grilling them.

  10. Awesome! I double the batch too and put the extras in the freezer. Homemade hummus and homemade pita is one thing I can get my picky eaters to eat at lunch time and know they are getting good nutrition. This recipe is tastes so much better than store bought, thanks!

  11. Looks good done like that, will have to put that on my list of things to try

  12. I have the hardest time finding pitas in my area. I’m going to be giving these a try very soon! Thanks for posting.

  13. I plan on making this next week. Only I cheat and use dough made up from Trader Joes 🙂

  14. I don’t have a bread machine, but I did make a double batch of bread dough the other day and froze half of it. This looks interesting. I think I will take it out of freezer and give this a try. Thanks for sharing it.

  15. I love my bread machine, let the machine do all the work and anytime I can cook outside on a hot day is fine with me. THANKS!!! for the recipe. Geri

  16. Those look like they turned out great!

  17. Looking good, as always. Thanks for linking to TMTT.

  18. What a great idea! Looks yummy!

  19. I would love to invite you to join me for Crock Pot Wednesday at Please come check it out. Thanks so much for posting.

  20. I recently received my mother-in-law’s bread machine, I’ve been looking for new recipes. These will be great! Thanks for sharing!

  21. Looks easy enough.

  22. These look great! I will have to try them! I love pizza on the grill! Bread machines are pretty cheap at walmart and places like big lots-even thrift stores or A kitchen aid mixer or food processor works too! Thanks!

  23. Great idea! And they look so yummy.

Where did you get the bread machine with that big loaf pan? One reason why I don’t use my bread machine is the loaf pan is taller than it is wider. Makes for interesting loaves. . .

  24. Such a fun idea! Thanks for the recipe!
I recently made all sorts of pizza on the grill, too!

  25. My oven doesn’t get hot enough to make pitas, so I’ve got to give this a try!

  26. Had to share this one on my twitter page. It just looks so good. Cannot wait to try it at home.

  27. LauraBeth says:

I’ve been wanting a pita recipe, so I’m going to give this a try, thanks!

  28. I have a bread machine (bread baking now in fact) but a charcoal grill rather than a a gas grill

  29. OHHHHH yeah. I’m all over that one!

  30. We tried these tonight. I have never, ever tried to make pitas before. I always assumed they would be too difficult. Other than my timing being way off (the bread machine takes 1:30 to mix the dough and that was right before swim practice), they were so easy to make. Just don’t walk away for too long 😛 Got a couple of crispy edges! My son loved them. We stuffed them with mixed greens, seasoned and grilled meat, and homemade ranch dressing. He ate two (-: But then, he’s 11 now and apparently has a hollow leg… best of all, it kept my kitchen cool!!

  31. hmmm. we dont have a grill right now. do you think the electric pancake griddle would work?

  32. If you did want to bake them in the oven, what temp and how long? I’m not a griller. 🙂

  33. Sherri Nelson says:

This is the third time making these! So easy and flavorful. We’ve stuffed with grilled meat, veggies and cucumber sauce, had them with homemade hummus and today they will be going with salad and Persian Lentil soup. Thanks so much for sharing this recipe as I’m sure to use again and again!
