Family Fun Meals

Once school starts things tend to get hectic during the week. With five kids homeschooling this year I feel like the day is over in a flash. Even though the kids are busy with school, chores, friends, extra projects, and lessons we almost always eat dinner together.

During the school year I try to make Friday night dinners something extra special. Usually on Friday night we have a “fun meal” which is followed by a movie or other fun activity. The kids always think it is great to have something a little different on Friday nights. I try to find meals that are super easy so I have a bit of a break too.

Here are a few of our favorite fun meals.

  • Make your own pizza
  • Nachos
  • Popcorn and smoothies
  • Mini Corn dog muffins
  • Ice cream and cake or Root Beer Floats (this is a rare, but boy oh boy do the kids love it!)
  • One letter meals. Create a meal where all the food starts with the same letter. For example: Peanuts, Pierogies, and Popcorn or Chips, Carrots and Cantaloupe. The kids always have fun trying to find food that starts with the correct letter!

How do you make the most of family meal time?

Friday Fun Meals work for OUR family!

  1. I like the idea of corn dog muffins. That would be much easier than hand dipping each turkey dog. lol! We use to do theme nights, but I haven’t done that in a long time. I’m sure my daughter would really enjoy it if I started it back up. 🙂

  2. My kids LOVE corn dogs and I’d rather not feedthem pre-processed foods. This is a great compromise! They’ll love it! Thanks bunches!

  3. i’ve tried your waffle recipe 5 times now and I’m wondering does it call for more than 1/2 C oil or less than 1/4C honey? Or perhaps you have a fairy wand that you wave? In the 5 times I made them, they stuck terribly to the waffle iron everytime. After time number 3 i started fiddling with the recipe but I just can’t figure it. Sorry to be a whiner but it looks like such a lovely recipe and your blog is always so interesting and helpful and so it leaves me wondering: where did your fairy wand come from and are they still available?:)

    • Sharing on this one…my waffle irons really vary. 🙂 I have one that sticks terribly if I don’t spray it EVERY single time while the other one will pop right out – same recipe.

So, even though I am sure Toni has a wand somewhere up there…it may just be your iron. 🙂

Hmm, I don’t know why you are having “sticking” issues. I have made this recipe in several different waffle makers and I don’t have that problem. Have you tried other recipes that don’t stick? Also, are you spraying your iron w/ non stick before you pour the batter? I spray with non stick spray before each batch….

      • i had been using another recipe for years without problems. i just like the way your recipe sounded and really wanted it to work- how will my evolution a happy housewife be complete if i can’t make her waffles!? it didn’t. back to making the other recipe- and if not a happy housewife, at least one that is more pleasant to live with:)

you could try replacing the honey with 1 tablespoon agave nectar. I have been doing it with agave the past month and I really like it. Maybe less liquid will help the stick…

  4. Oh, we love family fun night meals….backwards night (starting with dessert and “saving room” for veggies.) Having a picnic under the table…by candlelight. Haven’t done one in awhile. I need to get back at it.

  5. Okay, those corndog muffins are inspired! I’ll be trying this asap!

  6. Great ideas! We love popcorn and smoothies with a movie for family night, and homemade pizza is a favorite here too.

  7. This is a really fun idea! We usually do easy, fun food on the weekends, but I like the idea of making Friday nights extra special.

  8. What a great idea. I think I’m going to have to try a theme meal. Oh for preschoolers – you could do color themes: carrots, oranges, cantaloupe, cheddar cheese for orange!

  9. These are great ideas! I like the smoothies and popcorn idea the most, and make-your-own pizza sounds messy and fun! Thanks for sharing.

My family is just my husband, 5-month old baby, and me. Our snacks right now consist of chips and salsa, or my favorite: cheese quesadillas.

On Sunday mornings we really go all out, hanging out in the kitchen while I make either french toast, or milk toast. Yummy!

  10. I LOVE your blog! I just stumbled on it from blog frog and will definitely be back! {grin}
