Freezing Frosting

Did you know that you can freeze frosting? I always knew you could freeze frosting, but recently I tried freezing it in the decorating bag. I just removed the tip and froze it in a ziploc bag. This works great for me because we have several birthdays a few weeks apart. The frosting might go bad in the fridge, but it lasts for a few months in the freezer.

Thaw the frosting in the refrigerator and then knead a little in the bag until you have a uniform consistency. I am not sure how long frosting will last in the freezer, but I have frozen it for over two months without a problem.

I might add that this is homemade butter cream frosting. I don’t have a recipe, but basically it is powdered sugar, butter, milk, and vanilla.

Sorry for the poor picture quality, I am not sure what happened, but I promise it really does work! Also this was my first attempt at freezing and I did not remove the tip. Do not make this mistake, the frosting had a metal taste, my second attempt with the tip removed tasted fine.

We love to freeze left over frosting on graham crackers, makes a nice snack. Also, I use the same ingredients to make frosting but sometimes use imitation maple flavoring and then use the icing on top of a spice cake, it’s delicious.

  2. Cool! I’ll have to try that as I hat ethings going to waste and my sweet tooth acts up. LOL! 😀

  3. Great idea. I will need to use this idea very soon. Blessings.

  4. I just today made too much frosting, (the same recipe stated in your post) and stuck it in the freezer, then thought I’d better check and see if I can freeze it. Typed it in the search engine and your site came up. wow talk about lucky. thank you for posting this. Now I know I’m safe. Thanks

  5. Thank God! I thought I was going to have to throw away some of the best chocolate butter cream frosting I have ever made. Thank you for the great information.

Thanks for the info. I made a huge amount of mascarpone frosting w/fresh lemon zest (Williams Sonoma recipe) to be sure I had enough for a big birthday cake project. Sooo yummy, and sooo expensive to make, and there’s no way I can use up the extra while we’re still trying to make our way through the leftover birthday cake! (Not to mention post-Halloween sugar overload.) So, freezer it is. Hopefully the mascarpone won’t have some surprise properties when frozen and thawed… If anyone has feedback on that please let me know.

  7. I just made chocolate cake and chocolate frosting for a dinner party. I have left over frosting that I wanted to freeze. Both cake and frosting turned out amazing got the recipe off the hersey cocoa powder container. Really good and so easy if you can make cake from a box you can do this. I was surprized how easy it was. Thanks for the info!

  8. Good to know as I made too much peanut butter frosting and too much coffee frosting. I make plenty of cakes and cupcakes and didn’t want to throw it out.

  9. I’ve frozen cake w/ icing for 6 weeks w/ no problem, just defrosted in the fridge for several hours, so I don’t see why another 2 weeks wouldn’t matter. I’ve even froze lemon meringue pie (store bought) for several weeks with no problem.

  10. I’m using Wilton’s decorating icing on a Barney cake. Can I make ahead and freeze
