Homemade Pasta

Homemade Pasta at The Happy Housewife

If I knew how easy it was to make my own pasta I would have been making it for years. Not only is it easy, it is cheaper and healthier! I have posted a very basic recipe and tutorial below. I plan to add more complicated recipes as I experiment more.

Homemade Egg Pasta

  • 3 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups flour

  1. Crack 3 eggs into a bowl and gently beat the eggs.
  2. Add two cups of flour. Mix in the flour until dough sticks together. Add more flour or a small amount of water until the dough forms a ball.
  3. Take the dough out of the bowl and knead by hand until dough forms a soft ball.
  4. Wrap dough in plastic wrap and let rest for 20 minutes.
  5. After 20 minutes, roll out dough on a lightly floured surface. Do not roll the dough wider than the pasta machine.
  6. Lightly dust the pasta machine with flour to season the machine.
  7. Feed the dough into the pasta machine, turning the handle with one hand and holding the dough with the other.
  8. Twist the pasta into small nests and place on parchment paper that has been lightly dusted with flour.
  9. Cook pasta in boiling water for 6-8 minutes and then drain.
  10. Toss with your favorite sauce like this Asiago cream sauce!

If you do not have a pasta machine, roll the dough to a 1/8 inch thickness. Use a pizza cutter to cut the desired width of pasta.

  1. we love making pasta! it’s fun to do with friends that we have over. they’re always so amazed. i don’t know if we’d do it with a manual pasta machine. the good ol’ kitchen aid makes it even easier.

  2. I haven’t made pasta in years. I should get out the machine and try it again. Your pasta dish looks so good.

    • TheHappyHousewife says:

I was so excited after I made it, and my family said it tasted better than their favorite Italian restaurant!

      • I am going to make it this week. I already have all of the ingredients, plus a can of artichoke hearts. Thanks for the yummy post.

My pasta machine is not red. *sniff* Things taste better when they are made in/with red equipment. lol

  3. That looks so good! I made homemade noodles (more like dumplings) once a year for Christmas and it reminds me of those. I do not have any more room in my kitchen for one more gadget though! But I really want to try homemade pasta now. Thanks for making it look so easy.

  4. There is! I used one of the 20% off coupons that Bed Bath & Beyond sends out.

  5. I love anything Italian…partial to Baked Ziti. =)

  6. So-how do you clean the machine? This is something I have never been able to get a good answer to even with internet searches.

  7. Homemade pasta always brings the love…and compliments. I like a hand cranked pasta machine better than motor driven.

  8. please tell me youre going to post that recipe

    • TheHappyHousewife says:

I will, but seriously I winged it. I have no measurements. I’ll post the ingredients this week though.

  9. I have always been intimidated by making my own pasta but would love to try it. My favorite dish is Linguine with Clam Sauce.

  10. Kathleen says:

Looks delicious but I don’t have the dough attachment on mixer and don’t have the pasta machine. I better add these items to my wish list! And I second Leah, my all time favorite meal is Linguine with Clam Sauce. YUM

    • TheHappyHousewife says:

You can always use a pizza cutter to make fettuccine noodles or lasagna, you don’t have to have a machine, although it does help!

  11. My favorite dish is a seafood scampi – shrimp, clams, mussels, scallops in a light garlic, lemon and wine sauce. Homemade pasta does look fairly simple.

  12. We like to cook egg noodles and then mix in butter and Parmesan cheese for a quick & easy lunch

  13. I tried making pasta once, but (without a machine), it came out more like thin, wet bread. Have you ever experienced “real” pasta texture w/o a machine? I’d love to try this with freshly ground flour for the nutrition!

  14. Homemade pasta…next on the list. I’ll probably try it with ww flour so hopefully it’ll turn out well. I like the eggs added to it.

  15. I have made pasta for years without a machine. (Although, I do have one now.) All you really need is a rolling pin and pizza cutter. Roll the dough as thin as you would like it and then cut with the pizza cutter.

  16. I have so many pasta dishes I love that it’s hard to pick a favorite! I do have pasta on my “To Do” list and can’t wait to give it a try.

  17. I have never made pasta before but since I love to eat it, I think it is high time I gave it a try!

Can’t wait to see what other noodles you cook up.

  18. Heather H says:

I would love to win this! I have wanted to try making my own pasta for a long time! I love all pasta, but my favorite is linguine with shrimp in a white wine, garlic, hot chili, cream sauce- SO yummy!

  19. I haven’t made pasta in a long time. I think I’ll have to get some done this weekend.

  20. I don’t think pasta has ever looked that amazing before – yum! I’ve seen recipes that use only water and flour, although I’ve never tried them. I wonder how this compares. I guess I’ll have to get around to trying both! Once I finish up the pasta in my pantry, that is…

  21. I made some pasta this past weekend, but had trouble when I put it through the part that cuts. It kept getting bunched up and not wanting to come out. Eventually I gave up on cutting it and filled it with cheesy stuff instead. Any ideas what I could do next time though to make it work better?

    • i had the same problem when i first tryed it. i usually have to let it sit for a few minutes after rolling it out. it needs to dry just slightly before putting it through the cutter.

    • TheHappyHousewife says:

Maybe you need to add more flour to the dough? I would try that or letting it sit for a few minutes. I made some spinach pasta this weekend and it was stickier than normal. I kind of helped it out of the machine and then wrapped it before I put it on the parchment paper.

  22. I would like to make pasta, can it be dried to use later? It looks better then what you can buy.

  23. I am making this today!!! I’ve never made homemade pasta so I am excited to give it a shot.

  24. What can you tell me about freezing the pasta? I was able to get a pasta maker on freecycle and wanted to just make a month’s worth…How does/can you freeze this?

  25. Stephanie says:

OK looks yummy!!! Can I have your recipe to the Blackened Chicken and Sundried Tomato cream sauce?? PRETTY PLEASE!! IT LOOKS AMAZING!!!
    email is calebnsteph@yahoo.com

  26. My husband and I tried making pasta once, but it didn’t turn out very well. But, this looks simple and yummy! We’ll have to try it soon. Thanks for sharing!

  27. I have an electice pasta machine. I put the ingredients into the bowl, put the lid on, it mixes, rises, kneads, and then i choose the disc and it feeds it and cuts it for me…. super easy and yummy!

I got it for free from freecycle.org – you guys should look into it 🙂

    Happy cooking!

  28. You make this look so easy. What a treat to have fresh pasta! I do not have a pasta maker, so will have to hold off on that.
