Make Your Own Butter

My friend Gabriele has a great make your own butter tutorial on her blog. It is so easy, all you need is cream, salt and a food processor or blender.

With the price of butter rising rapidly (it was $2.89 at the Commissary last week), this is also less expensive!

  1. cream prices are rising just as fast as butter prices. if you measure the quantity of cream it takes to make your butter and the quantity you get and calculate the unit cost, i find it’s still cheaper to buy butter already made.

  2. Gabriele Mia says:

I pay 3.39 for one quart of cream at costco. It makes 2 1/2 pound of fresh butter and 1 1/2 cups fresh buttermilk. I don’t know the prices of fresh buttermilk, but I think making your own butter is still cheaper then buying already made butter; plus you have fresh butter milk as well, which by the way is great in your baking 🙂

  3. you know, I thought butter was skyrocketing, too. It has come down here in MO lately. I buy mine at Sam’s and it had steadily up to 11. something for a four pack. Last time I shopped, it was back down to 8.5?, which is where I’m used to seeing it priced

  4. If you don’t have a food processor or blender, you can still make butter. Just use a canning jar with a lid. Pour the cream in, cover, and shake it for 12-15 minutes. The butter will separate from the butter milk. Plus you get a little arm workout.

  5. How interesting! I’ve never thought to make my own butter before.

  6. I eat mostly organics and I’m paying $4.99 for four sticks of butter, but I don’t know how much organic cream is – I’ll have to look into it.

  7. Also – wondering how long fresh butter lasts? I’m single and I use some butter – depending on whether I’m having a baking week I’d use more – but will this make a lot/then go bad? Or can I freeze some of it?
