If you are looking for a sweet and tasty treat try these delicious mocha banana muffins. There are a few variations on this recipe to make it work for your family, but however you make them they are sure to delight! These are perfect for a brunch or even a dessert. My kids think they are cupcakes, little do they know they are eating whole grain flour, bananas, and applesauce!

Mocha Banana Muffins (Whole Wheat)




Yield 12


  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup canola oil or applesauce
  • 1/4 cup strong black coffee
  • 1 cup mashed ripe bananas
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup walnuts chopped (optional)
  • 1 cup coconut (optional)
  • 1 cup milk chocolate chips (optional)


  1. Mix together flour, cocoa powder, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. Then add in eggs, oil (or applesauce), buttermilk, coffee, bananas, and vanilla.
  3. Mix until combined and moist. (Do not over mix your batter.)
  4. Mix in walnuts, coconut, and chocolate chips.
  5. Fill greased muffin tins 2/3 full with the muffin batter.
  6. Bake in a 350 degree oven for approximately 20 minutes.




  1. Mmm! These look so moist they’d just melt in your mouth. One family-pleasing banana baked good I love making is banana bread with lemon glaze. Banana and lemon is truly a match made in fruit heaven. I’m sure banana plus mocha is just as tasty! I’m bookmarking this recipe.

      Actually I am not a coffee lover, but I liked these muffins. My older kids (who don’t like coffee) liked them too. You could always use decaf coffee if caffeine was an issue.

    Okay… I have a serious coffee addiction so I can’t wait to try these muffins! Have you tried using coconut oil instead of canola oil? I used coconut oil in your cinnamon sugar type muffins and it was AWESOME!

  8. In the process of baking a triple batch of these right now, the first set is out of the oven and they are super tasty (I waited a whole two minutes before I tried one)! I put all the good stuff in there… applesauce, coconut, walnuts and chocolate chips. I always have some leftover coffee and this took care of all of my browning bananas as well.     These sound great – but is there a sub for the buttermilk. I don’t want to buy a 2L container for the small amount in this recipe. Can I just use regular milk instead?
