Whole Wheat Breadsticks

The secret to pizza parlor breadsticks is cornmeal and butter, lots of butter.

Whole Wheat Breadsticks

For the Breadsticks

  • 1 1/3 cups warm water
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cups flour ( I used whole wheat)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons oregano
  • 3 tablespoons powdered milk
  • 2 teaspoons yeast
  • cornmeal (for rolling the dough, do not add to the dough mixture)

For the Topping

  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • Garlic Powder
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Salt

  1. Mix together olive oil, yeast, salt, oregano, powdered milk, and warm water.
  2. Add in flour.
  3. Knead for 5 minutes.
  4. Cover dough and let rise until doubled.
  5. Punch down dough and roll out into a rectangle. To get that pizza parlor taste use cornmeal instead of flour to roll the dough.
  6. Place dough on a greased cookie sheet. Push or roll the dough so it fills the entire cookie sheet.
  7. With a knife or pizza cutter slice the dough into one inch strips. Don’t cut all the way through the dough, only about half-way through.
  8. Let rise for 30 -45 minutes.
  9. Mix together melted butter, garlic powder and Parmesan cheese.
  10. Brush the mixture on top of the breadsticks, then sprinkle a pinch of salt.
  11. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until the top turns golden brown.

I used a 9 x 13 pan, which I do not recommend because the breadsticks were really thick. A cookie sheet creates the perfect sized breadsticks.

  5. This looks yummy! Will definitely give it a try! Love that it’s whole wheat!

  6. These look great. I’ll try to make them later in the week. To knead I can use my Kitchen Aid stand mixer right? I use the dough hook. What setting would be best? Thanks!

  7. These look fabulous! Love how they are whole wheat, toO!

  8. This is going to be a must-try for me. I am always looking for ways to “sneak” some extra whole wheat into our diets. Thanks for sharing. 🙂 I’m visiting from Jen’s Tasty Tuesday party today. 🙂

  9. Thank you for sharing your recipe. I’m glad you used whole wheat, but also powdered milk. I recently purchased some powdered milk, but had no idea where to use it except in my low carb coffee mix. Another pizza parlor trick is they mix powdered cheese into their garlic butter! My husband ran an italian restaurant for over 10 years and his customers loved it. They look delicious!

  10. I made these to go with pasta for supper tonight, used the bread machine to do the dough which made them very easy. I love that they’re whole wheat, and they got great reviews from the family!

  11. Made these last night before the big trick or treating extravaganza and they were a big hit with my whole family! The kids even packed the leftovers in their lunches with some pizza sauce to use as a dip. Super easy!!
